The IWRHS self publishes two books, they are excellent reads on the Water Route history. Both books are available in our gift shop and online.

A nostalgic account of homesteading near Petoskey, in northern Michigan, in the late 1800’s. Georgia Hufford describes the rounds of daily life on a relatively self-sufficient farm. Hufford recalls tasks such as sugaring, fishing, cleaning house, and baking, as well as encounters with extinct wildlife, such as the large flocks of passenger pigeons that used to pass through the area. She also talks about logging, early commercial furniture-making, fighting forest fires and other activities that homesteaders experienced in the north woods of Michigan. Hufford also describes her work as teacher, working in local government, serving as a postmistress, and her work in retailing. Family verse and quotes from Robert Burns, Ella Wheeler Wilcox and other popular poets appear throughout. A wonderful historical homesteading story of the Inland Water Route area of Norther Michigan named “Then Came May”. Order Here:

In The Wake of the Topinabee is and excellent read as well. A flood of memories pours through these pages, unfolding the simple neighborly pleasures of early lakeside living on Crooked Lake in 1902. It is packed with historical highlights when tourist excursion steamboats plied the waters of the Inland Route and tugs towed booms of logs to mills on its shores. The role of railroads introducing tourism as the economy destined to supplant lumbering is well told. The interurban Dummy Train system gave all the communities of this area ready access to one another. It is a happy chronicle of resort life. To older residents this story will bring pleasant memories, to newcomers, an enlightening appreciation of the background of the region. This book is a tribute to the soul-soothing tranquility of Michigan’s summers.
